Latest News From Greetham Valley Golf Club
By The Editor 8th Aug 2019
The Gents and Ladies sections at Greetham Valley Golf Club were out in force on Sunday, playing for their respective Moore Stephen Trophies along with trying to add more Order of Merit points to their totals.
In the Ladies Trophy, Lesley Young (hcp 18) had a terrific round of gross 82 (nett 64) in which she was particularly strong on the front where she only dropped two shots to the course (and those were on the 1st and 9th).
Lesley's high standard subsided slightly on the return but she still bettered her handicap to come in first place by a margin. Izzy Haughton (9) also scored better than handicap with her nett 71 which gave her the runner-up position.
Izzy was steady on the front (although the 7th caused some problems) and played even better on the back half where a birdie on the 17th meant that she completed those nine holes in only three over gross. Liz Haughton (5) took third spot with a nett 72 and after nine holes was looking to challenge Lesley as she completed that half in gross - the back nine however caused her to drop four shots and push her behind Izzy.
In the Gents Trophy, Ian Brocklehurst (24) came top with a stunning nett 64 in round in which he never exceeded a double bogey (and only had four of those) and even birdied the 17th to go with his other four pars.
Ian Cunningham (13) played what might normally be a Trophy-winning round with his nett 6, but it was insufficient to overtake the winner. Ian dropped six shots to the course on the first six holes but thereafter seemed to hit top form as he lost only two further shots over the last twelve holes which also saw three birdies.
Third position was taken by Jon Rookledge (10) who also scored nett 67 and hewas equally consistent over both halves but was just pipped on countback as a result of being outscored on birdies over the back nine by Ian.
On Saturday a Qualifying Stableford was played on the Valley course and there was a terrific win for Greg Dobbs (13) when he came in with 41 points following a round in which he only dropped five shots to the course (with the exception of the 5th where everything went wrong and he ended up with a no score).
Close behind was Terry McNulty (19) with a score of 40 following a mixed bag of play where he had six pars but these were intermingled with various bogeys and a complete failure on the 9th. Third place went to David Squires (12) with 34 points in which he included two no-scores, but a stunning eagle on the 11th was the highlight of his round.
In Round 1 of the Junior Championship (played on the Lakes course) Joe Sargood (6) set a very challenging target when he had the best gross and nett score.
Joe was in sparkling form as he stood two under gross after three holes and although he dropped shots to the course he still turned at only one over and a level gross return half cemented his place at the top of the leaderboard.
In second place (on nett score) Archie Curtis (23) turned in great card to register nett 69. Archie started like a train with par-par on the first two holes and although he could not keep this level going he was still playing at three under his handicap at the turn.
The back nine was more of a challenge but a great par on 16 gave him every encouragement for the last two holes. Third place went to Isabella Condie (12) with nett 71 in a round where she had three birdies and was generally steady throughout but a double on the 17th just pushed her into bronze position. In the Mid-Week Medal Chris Steele had one of his best ever rounds when he eased round the course to win the competition with a nett score of 66. Chris (3) only dropped two shots to the course during his round and augmented this play with five birdies as well as he ended up taking the competition by a three shot margin. In runner-up position, Neil Baker (10) completed his round in gross 79 (for nett 69) with very steady play across both halves.
