On Monday, the Seniors at Greetham Valley Golf Club played a Stableford qualifier on the Valley course and Neil Lowndes ended at the top of the leader-board for the second week running when he recorded a score of 41 points.

Neil (hcp 11) won the June Medal last week and should have had an even higher score as he failed to record a score on the 9th after a very solid front eight, which included a birdie on the 4th.

Turning for home, Neil was clearly incensed by his error and completed the last nine holes in level par with seven pars and a birdie.

Close behind, but losing on countback, was Seniors Captain John Taylor (13). John had three birdies on the front nine and was looking particularly strong but an error on the 12th meant no score and although he played the last six holes in two over gross it was not enough to peg back Neil.

Third position went to Mike Hoye (15), who has been having recent back problems, but these did not seem to deter him as he scored 40 thanks to a very steady round overall, registering only one double bogey (on the 8th) and finishing with two birdies on the last three holes.

The Ladies Section played a Midweek Stableford competition on the Lakes which resulted in a comfortable win for Jo Robinson (13) with 37 points.

This score included a birdie on the second hole and a further seven pars distributed around the course. With scores on all holes, Jo was pleased with her day's scoring.

In runner-up position, Lesley Storey (27) was also scoring steadily on all holes until it all fell apart on the final hole where the water condemned her to a no-score, and it was this that restricted her total to 35.

Lesley was delighted to rack up a par on the 6th and to follow this with successive pars on 14 and 15. Third place went to Sue Brand (14) who scored 33 despite registering two failures. Sue obviously pulled herself together after the first of these as she dropped only three shots to the card over the next seven holes, but then her concentration lapsed as she had the second failure.

Last Saturday the Ladies played their Ping Qualifier (which potentially offers entry to the nationally based competition) which is played in a Better-Ball format.

There were a host of impressive scores with the team of Isabella Condie and Izzy Haughton taking second spot with 39 points (just beating Lesley Young and Bev Dolman on countback) - but out in front were Kay Ropson and Pat Jamieson who totalled a magnificent 45 points.

The Greetham Mixed Open was played on the Lakes course in a four-ball format with the best Lady and Gent scores on each hole being taken forward.

The winning combination was a home based team of Andrew Woods (8), Rachel Nicholls (14), Wayne Porter (15) and Steph Craft (16) who aggregated 92 points.

Whilst this team scored well on all holes (except for the 8th where only Andrew contributed) a couple of 7-pointers eased their way to the top of the field and it was Wayne and Steph who were certainly the high scorers on the return half.

Another home-based team took the runners-up position as Craig Allan (13), Valda Austin (17), Ian Lidbetter (20) and Pat Jamieson (15) amassed 88 points and, in fact, had a better front nine than the overall winners. But the return half was a slightly different story as the team were unable to capitalise on their fine start.

The First Team travelled to Blakeney at the weekend, needing a result to avoid dropping into a relegation battle. Rory Smith and Darren Child were sent out first and gained an excellent half after being 2-down with four holes to play.

And this encouraging start was followed by the new pairing of Leon Wyche and Chris Steele who played solid golf to win 2-up to give the team a narrow lead.

The home team, however, had packed their middle order with some strong pairs and, despite some battling performances, Adam Clegg and Lewis Chisholm, Paul Clegg and Ben Easson and Mark Neave and Russ Aust all narrowly lost 2-and-1 to take an uncatchable lead.

This meant that despite Richard Wilson and Ray Gladwinfield, who rolled back the years to when they first played team golf together back in 2002, winning the final game by 4 and 3, the team ultimately lost 3 ½ to 2 ½ .
