Last Saturday two trophies were up for grabs as the lower handicap golfers at Greetham Valley GC played for the Lime & Stone Trophy and the higher (18+) handicaps played for the Rabbits Trophy.

In the former, Russ Aust (hcp 4) came out on top with an excellent score of 39 points thanks to a steady round which he completed in only one over gross thanks to a total of four birdies, including two in the last four holes.

Close behind, Peter Maksymiw (12) scored 38 with a consistent round once he got the first hole, which cost him a double bogey, out of the way.

'Max' was particularly steady during the mid-section of the round which he completed in only four over gross. Third place went to Dave Copley (9) who also scored 38 with a round of great expectation as he had 12 pars and a birdie, but errors on three holes meant that he also had three double bogeys to push him into third spot.

In the Rabbits Trophy, it was a very close run thing as the top four players were only separated by one point, with the top two being separated on countback and a similar outcome for the third and fourth players.

Robin Bell won (for the second time, having also won in 2010) with 36 points and scored on all holes including pars on the difficult Stroke Indices 1 and 2.

Just losing out on countback, Andy Bimpson (19) also had 36 points and was particularly steady, but he had two no scores which were crucial in the final outcome. Third spot was taken by Gordon Barbour (20) who had 35 points, just beating Simon Bell on countback as he finished very strongly with 15 points over the last six holes.

In the Gents Mid-Week medal, there was a slightly reduced field due to the very wet and challenging weather, but this did not deter Lewis Chisholm and Jon Baxter from fighting it out for top spot.

The eventual winner was Lewis (6) with a gross 78 thanks to a masterfully consistent golf with only six bogeys and a balance of pars.

Jon (14) was in pole position throughout his round but trouble on the last two holes caused him to drop five shots to the card and pushed him into runner-up slot. The bronze place went to Lewis's brother Jack Chisholm (10) with a nett 73 and it was only a scrappy start on the first hole, where he had a double bogey, that prevented him from finishing higher as he completed the back nine in only three over gross.

The Ladies Mid-Week Medal was won by Sue Clegg (29) with a nett score of 74 in a round in which she carded regularly and was delighted to include a par on the 12th.

Sandy Begy (34) was some way behind with a nett 84 and it was a disastrous spell over the last four holes that really punished her. Third place went to Kathy Horner (23) who totalled 84 and was left highly frustrated as she started like a train, reaching the turn at only eight over gross but the back nine was a completely different story as her game subsided as the round progressed.

At the Lincolnshire Seniors Championship, played at Stoke Rochford on Wednesday, Paul Clegg was the best placed Greetham Valley GC player with a very creditable nett 71 to finish in fifth place overall and also as the best nett score in his category.

At the Lincolnshire Past and Present Senior Captains event, held at Belton Park, the Greetham team (one of two) of David Aldred, Radley Wardhaugh, Mike Guy and Fred Aspin took third spot overall.

On Monday the Men's Seniors played their June Medal on the Lakes Course and, although the weather conditions were beneficial, the recent wet weather clearly had affected most members leaving them very rusty and scoring was not as competitive as it should have been.

The overall winner was an early starter in Neil Lowndes (12) with a score of 70 nett. Neil was a model of consistency in his round which included nine pars and only one double bogey and was particularly strong on the last five holes on which he only dropped one shot to the card.

Three shots behind Neil was Ian Taylor (18) who totalled 73 in a round of mixed fortunes. He was delighted to score a birdie on the 6th, only to drop six shots over the next two holes before he composed himself for the back nine. Further problems on the 13th occurred but two pars on the last four holes mollified him somewhat in the clubhouse.

David Gregory (24) came third on countback (also with 73) and although David parred the second he dropped too many shots on the back half to squeeze into the runner-up slot. In the 9-hole competition Jack Vernal showed his prowess at the short game with another Stableford win.
