Rutland's only women's cricket team is holding a soft ball tournament later this month to encourage more women and girls to sign up for the sport.

The Marko Marvels, part of Market Overton Cricket Club, is staging the free fun competition on Sunday, 30 June at the club's home in Thistleton Road, Market Overton.

Team secretary Emma Hudson told Oakham Nub News: "The idea of the event is to encourage more young girls and women to play cricket.

"We are inviting teams of six to take part and it's a great opportunity for family members or work colleagues to get together for what promises to be a fun-packed afternoon.

"For those who want to join in, but don't have a team of six, we can create them on the day.

"All ages and abilities are very welcome."

The minimum player age is 14 and the event is being held from 12noon to 6pm.

All players taking part in the tournament will enjoy a free barbeque and glass of Prosecco (over 18s only) and receive a t-shirt.

The Marko Marvels was formed in early 2018 to promote inclusivity at Market Overton Cricket Club and the team plays soft ball friendly matches, tournaments and indoor leagues as well as women-only hard ball cricket.

Free training sessions are held every Monday from 7pm to 8.30pm, May to September, offering a fun introduction to cricket for beginners as well as coaching for more experienced players.

Annual membership is £35 - but newcomers are welcome to take part in a free taster session.
