The new season has begun for Oakham Rugby Club's XV team, and has already seen dramatic play and a blue light emergency - warning, article contains graphic images.

Their first game of the season, which took place on 2 September, saw Oakham Rugby Football Club (ORFC) face Market Bosworth at home in a competitive match.

Unfortunately for Oakham, and despite a victorious friendly against Syston the previous week, Market Bosworth stole the win.

None the less, the boys are looking smart in the new kit that was introduced ahead of the new season - to mixed reviews from the players.

The kit saw the team heading out onto the pitch again this weekend, Saturday 9 September, looking proud to represent the friendly local club.

However, the game was paused by a bloody accident for one of Oakham's regular first team players.

Pete Rawlinson, a long-time ORFC first team player, suffered a game-ending head injury and, despite smiles, was rushed to hospital for medical attention and nine stitches.

He suffered an arterial bleed that couldn't be stopped, so he was blue lighted to Kettering, where he joked that he got a "free haircut" where the team worked on the top of his head.

He added: "Most importantly, we won today!"

Pete is doing well and hopes to be back playing when he has been signed off to do so.

Well done ORFC on a great victory, and top teamwork in an emergency.
