Oakham rugby stars are expecting to play in the upcoming World Cup, with international matches already underway.

Former Oakham School pupil and Scarlets Rugby star Sam Costelow marked his first start for Wales with a win over England and his former Oakham schoolmate, Jack van Poortvliet.

The fly-half and his Wales side claimed a 20-9 victory in the Vodafone Summer Series match against England, with Costelow staking a claim for a place in the Wales squad for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in France.

It was Costelow's inch-perfect cross-kick to Aaron Wainwright that helped finally unlock the resilient England defence, allowing Gareth Davies to touch down in the 47th minute for the pivotal opening try of the game.

Meanwhile, Leicester Tigers and England scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet came on as a 49th minute replacement for the experienced Danny Care. His assured performance will help his cause, as he vies for a starring role in England's XV, having now secured his place in the World Cup squad.

The exciting young half-back duo attended Oakham together, both completing their studies in 2019 before embarking on professional rugby careers.

The Rugby World Cup, which kicks off in France in a month's time, may see a trio of Old Oakhamians lining up for three different home nations sides. Experienced Edinburgh flanker Hamish Watson, who attended Oakham School until 2010, and has represented the British & Irish Lions, is expected to be part of Scotland's squad.

Oakham School has an impressive pedigree of producing elite rugby talent, including Lewis Moody, Tom Croft and Matt Smith.

The School's 1st XI are reigning Continental Tyres U18 Schools Cup Champions, claiming the title for the fourth time in March with a 31-24 win over Trinity School at Twickenham.
