A police helicopter was called out to assist Leicestershire officers after a group was spotted 'acting suspiciously' in Oakham's Ashwell Road in the early hours of Sunday.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "NPAS (National Police Air Service) were called to assist officers on the ground after some people were seen acting suspiciously in Ashwell Road just after 3am on 1 September.

Rutland County Council has backed a hard-hitting report which urges Government to act quickly to help ease funding pressures on councils and allow them to provide high quality local services.

The hard-hitting report came from the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee which looked in detail at local government finances across the country.

Oakham RFC has announced that it will hold a minute's silence before Friday night's game in memory of former junior player Alex Waycot.

The club was among those leading the tributes after hearing of Alex's sudden death, aged 21. He played at junior level with Oakham, joining the Under 10s and going on to help them win four county cups in consecutive seasons.

On Sunday, the Gents 19+ Club Championship was played on the Greetham Valley Lakes Course in baking conditions (having been delayed from July by appalling weather) and there was very tight competition between the top three players who were all playing off very similar handicaps.

The eventual winner was Mark Luxford (19hcp) with a gross score of 91 from his round which was remarkably steady. Mark was particularly strong over the back half which he competed in only six over gross and this could have been even better if he had avoided problems on the last.
