Coronavirus crisis: Rutland MP seeks views on lockdown

Local News by The Editor 3rd Nov 2020

Rutland MP Alicia Kearns is calling on her constituents to tell her what they think of the planned national lockdown before she votes on the measure tomorrow.

Mrs Kearns says she has spoken to Health Secretary Matt Hancock and health officials on the pandemic and says though case numbers in Rutland and Melton are relatively low, they are increasing rapidly.

For example, she says case numbers have increased by 207% in Rutland since September 28.

The MP said: "At rates like that, the Government has to take serious action to arrest the rise in cases, and the steadily increasing hospitalisation rates throughout the country. Contrary to some reports, we are moving quickly, and are moving into lockdown faster than many other European countries did, who all moved at a higher point on the disease curve. I am now assessing the data to determine what is the right approach for us and the nation."

However, as Nub News reported on Sunday, the most recent government figures have shown a decline in cases in Rutland on a weekly basis, though they can and often fluctuate.

Yesterday's figures showed a further fall in the weekly rate, with Rutland reporting 31 cases over seven days, giving it a weekly rate of 77.6 cases per 100,000- about a third of the England average.

The number of Covid-19 deaths since March remained at 15 yesterday, though one death was reported at the weekend.

In her message, the MP then details the rules and regulations to be imposed, along with support schemes for businesses, before two questions are offered.

The first is asking whether people support an England-wide lockdown or not. The second asks if people prefer a tiered system of local lockdowns or a national one. No option is given for no lockdowns whatsoever.
