Cutts Close may well be the centre of Oakham Town Council's Christmas festivities this year.

A report by town councillor Sally Wadsworth is recommending a move from the traditional lights switch on in Market Place.

Coun Wadsworth said: "This year's Summer music events have been a great success, well attended, and the feedback Council have received has been very positive."

After thanking various councillors for their hard work over the summer events, she continued: "This year the Events working group have decided not to have the 'light switch on' in the Market Place, but to use Cutts Close for a Christmas Music Fayre:

  • Sunday 5th December between the times of 12noon – 6pm
  • To invite local choirs/singers to perform Christmas songs/carols in the Bandstand
  • To invite (ideally local) stall holders to stand at the event free of charge
  • To invite the Grainstore to provide an outside bar."

Her report to be discussed at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Town Council on Wednesday evening also proposes the following:

  • To approve the hiring of a large marquee for the Christmas event and approve the expenditure of £3000
  • To approve the purchase of 6 x banners to advertise the Christmas event, and the expenditure of £300
  • To approve the purchase of 3 large plastic black dustbins, and the expenditure of £45"

Events for 2022 are also being considered, which features the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and a four day Bank Holiday during June 2-5.

Coun Wadsworth said: "With lots of celebrations being organised across the country, we feel this would be the ideal weekend to begin our summer events.

"So far the Town Council has been asked to take part in the Lighting of the Beacon which will take place in Cutts Close on the 2nd June (time to be confirmed), also 'Party in the Park' on Sunday 5th June, 12noon – 7pm."

Her report further proposes councillors approve the following:
  • A 2-day event on 4th-5 th June 2022
  • A Sunday event from 12th June – 21st August 2022
  • A 2-day event on 28th -29th August 2022
  • To approve the hiring of porta-loos for 4th-5th June and 28th-29th August 2022
  • To agree the preliminary funding for the above events

The agenda for Wednesday's meeting can be found here.
