Rutland MP Alicia Kearns is encouraging residents living with dementia or caring for someone with the condition to share their experiences with the independent Geller Commission review.

Ms. Kearns is currently working on a campaign to improve dementia care in Rutland, but emphasises the importance of individual voices in shaping the national conversation.

The Geller Commission, led by Baroness Ilora Finlay and CEO Laurence Geller, is conducting a comprehensive review of hospital care for people living with dementia. This review aims to identify current challenges and propose solutions for better care and support.

Kearns emphasises the urgency of public participation: "Having spoken to many constituents in Rutland struggling with dementia, I understand the profound impact it has on individuals, families, and the wider community. The Geller Commission's review provides a crucial opportunity to make real improvements in dementia care, and I urge everyone affected to share their experiences."

Kearns has also outlined her own local efforts, adding: "While I advocate for national change through my campaign, I recognise the need for immediate action in Rutland. Later this year, I will announce specific initiatives to improve early diagnosis, post-diagnosis support, and resources for carers and loved ones."

The MP for Rutland and Melton has urged constituents, relatives and friends suffering with or caring for a dementia patient in Rutland to submit their feedback to the Geller Commission before the deadline of 29 February 2024.

Sharing personal experiences directly on the Commission's website is encouraged.

The Geller Commission will consider three overarching priorities:

  • Prevention: early interventions and preventative measures to avoid initial hospitalisation and empower care providers to act.
  • Protection: improving care for people with dementia in hospital to reduce the risk of readmission and expedite a return to a home setting.
  • Simplification: identifying immediate barriers to timely or appropriate discharge
