Today, Friday 12 May, another Oakham Town Councillor has resigned, meaning that there are now 5 vacancies on Oakham Town Council (OTC), despite last week's Local Elections.
Former Cllr David Romney, who was Mayor of Oakham in 2019, has resigned from Oakham Town Council.
His resignation follows the re-election of Sally-Anne Wadsworth as Mayor.
As it now stands, there are 7 Cllrs on OTC and 5 vacancies. OTC can currently co-opt 4 Cllrs, while Mr Romney's seat has to have a vacancy notice posted and the option for residents to call the election.
On Wednesday 10 May 2023, Sally-Anne Wadsworth was re-elected as Mayor of Oakham following her 2022/23 stint in office.
This follows the Local Elections, in which Oakham Town Council - and many other local, town and parish councils across Rutland - had vacant seats and uncontested seat holders.
Cllr Wadsworth has encouraged members of the public to come forward to stand for council.
Sally-Anne was Deputy Mayor in 2019/20 and was predicted to take the role on in 2021/22, before Zoë Nealson was put forward as an unexpected candidate by Cllr David Romney, who was Mayor at the time.
Only one Councillor voted against the re-election, allegedly former Cllr Romney.
Cllr Chris Nix, who runs Ovation in Gaol Street with his partner Bianca, will take on the role of Deputy Mayor.
Sally-Anne will remain as Mayor of Oakham until May 2024.
