New signs will welcome visitors to a field in Oakham.

Oakham Town Council agreed to buy three signs for Centenary Field for £252. This comes as trees are planted on the green space, gifted by Rutland County Council.

Some have celebrated the decision to plant more trees, claiming that it prevents flooding and is a positive step for the environment, while others have commented that the planting of trees will prevent any development from happening on the land - which last year was at the heart of a controversial proposal to build a skatepark for the young and old of Rutland.

The signs will welcome visitors to Centenary Field saying it is the 'Home of Rutland Remembers', and explain that the area in owned and managed by Oakham Town Council.

Currently, there is no permanent signage on Centenary Field, and unlike other public recreational areas in the town there is very little public information on display.

The new signs, which are painted green and have remembrance poppies and the coat of arms of Oakham TownCouncil on them, also have information how to contact the council.

Centenary Field, which is about five acres (1.97 hectares) in size, has been leased by the council since April 13, 2015, for a period of 99 years, from the Tresham Institute.

The signs will be placed at Cutts Close, Royce's Recreation and Willow Crescent and should be installed no later than May 2024.
