On Sunday (April 28), with the previous day's high winds having abated, the Rover Cup (Mixed Competition) was contested on the Greetham Valley Golf Club Lakes course with Adam Clegg (4) scoring 40 Stableford points and only taking third place!
Adam was particularly strong on the back half which he completed in one under gross, thanks to birdies on 15 and 18, and recorded a total of 13 pars in total.
Ahead of Adam was Ken McCann (11) who scored 41 points with another succession of pars and birdies and it was only the 16th, where he carded a 7, which was a minor blot on his round.
Top spot went to Connor Mousley (26) who scored an amazing 43 points. Connor was a model of consistency throughout (with the exception of the 8th hole where there was a failure to score) although a 7 on the last took a little gloss off an otherwise exceptional round.
Amongst the Ladies, Ellie Haughton was the highest placed with 38 points followed by Yasmin Bass on 35pts.
Ellie (2) played the front half in gross par thanks to an eagle on the 5th hole to counteract bogeys on the 7th and 9th but exceeded that performance on the return as she carded three birdies to complete the back half in regulation.
Yasmin (27) was close to achieving a much higher score but was undone on three holes which pegged her back.
On the previous day, the GVGC Second Team had a really tough day as Storm Hannah battered all the players with 50 mph winds and driving showers.
Playing at home for the first time, Greetham were drawn against last year's LUGC League (South) winners, Belton Park, and were expecting - and got - a really hard game.
The first pair of Lee Martin and Darren Want struggled manfully and were ultimately delighted to record a good half. With five of the matches going down the final hole there was tension amongst all the team.
Darren Houghton and Harry Sargood provided an excellent win whilst Dan Kettle and Alex Barnett and Craig Allan and Paul Thwaites notched valuable halves. In spite of the valiant effort by all, the team ultimately went down 3½ to 2½.
On Easter Tuesday, the Seniors section played their April Medal and there was a stunning win for Eddie Montgomery (8), who has hit a golden run of form, as he scored nett 66 thanks to two birdies and twelve pars to finish at two over gross.
Close behind him was Steve Orton (11) who totalled nett 67 as he finished at 6-over gross with a succession of pars and nothing worse than bogeys.
Third spot went to Ian Taylor (19) who also had a nett 67. But a disastrous final hole (where he took a 9) spoilt what would have been a winning score.
In the nine hole qualifier Rod Wells, Peter MacDonald-Pearce and Barry Tillotson had a real tussle as only one point separated them, with Rod eventually prevailing.
On the following day, Eddy Montgomery was at it again (playing off his new handicap) as he took fourth place in the Midweek Stableford (with 37 points) when he was beaten on countback by Joe Sargood (6).
Joe played the back nine in only one over gross thanks to a birdie on the 17th but it was a double bogey on the 9th that spoilt an otherwise impeccable card.
Runner-up was Pete Bagshaw (8) who scored 39 points in a round which was level par until the 9th tee where a double bogey knocked his confidence a bit.
The return half was very similar with one double bogey (on 13) and a host of pars. The overall winner, with 41 points, was Derek Clark (20) who stormed around the course and who ought to have scored better still as this included a failure on the 11th.
The Seniors section played a par-bogey competition on the Valley course and there was a very welcome win for Fred Want (21) who scored an excellent +5 score thanks to some really steady play in the middle section of the course.
In second spot was Keith Stafford (13) on +4 who scored 10 pars and had only one hole worse than a bogey (on the 10th).
In third place was Tim Howlett (17) who totalled +2; Tim had a curate's egg of a round with a mix of birdies (2), pars (6) and rather more double bogeys than he wished for. In the nine hole Stableford competition this week Barry Tillotson came out top with 15 points.
