New measures are being trialled by Rutland County Council to reduce verge side parking around Rutland Water in response to concerns about road safety and environmental damage.

Inconsiderate parking on footways, cycle tracks and verges can cause road safety issues and obstruct emergency access, as well as damaging plants and wildlife in environmentally sensitive areas.

As part of a trial developed in conjunction with the Rutland Water Partnership, parking on footways, cycle paths and verges has been banned within a designated zone around Rutland Water.

The zone is clearly signposted at entry and exit points and monitored by civil enforcement officers during busy periods, including weekends and bank holidays.

The trial measures will be reviewed after a maximum of 18 months to consider their impact and assess whether they have been successful.

Chris Traill, Strategic Director for Places at Rutland County Council, said: "You might have seen our civil enforcement officers out and about near Rutland Water over recent weekends.

"They have been talking to people to let them know about the new parking restrictions that have come into force in the area and why they've been put in place.

"Rutland Water is a popular destination for walking, cycling and water sports. This isn't something we want to discourage but it is important that visitors park safely, responsibly and with consideration for people who live close to the reservoir."

The Rutland Water Partnership is a collaborative group comprising agencies, companies and individuals with a particular interest in the Rutland Water environment.
