Coronavirus crisis: Council concerned over more than 30 cases in Rutland village

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Ketton Ward has risen by more than 30 in the past two weeks.

In total, 18 new cases of the virus were recorded in the Ketton area during the week leading up to Monday 18 January. This is on top of a further 18 new cases recorded the week before.

Although relatively small when compared to other parts of the UK, this increase represents a significant proportion of the new cases reported in Rutland in the past fortnight.

There is no single source or setting responsible for the increase – such as a school, care home or large employer.

As a result, Rutland County Council has taken steps to write to every household in Ketton Ward, to ensure they have access to the latest advice and guidance.

The current national lockdown means that people living in England must not leave home unless for a small number of essential reasons.

This includes:

· Shopping for basic necessities, either for yourself or a vulnerable person

· Going to work, if you cannot reasonably work from home

· Exercising once a day with your household, support bubble or one other person

· Seeking medical assistance or to avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)

· To attend education or childcare

To receive a COVID-19 test or vaccination

Anyone leaving home for one of these reasons should follow social distancing rules, wear a face covering in enclosed spaces, and wash their hands when leaving and returning home.

Mike Sandys, Director for Public Health at Rutland County Council, said: "We understand the pressure that families are facing because of COVID-19 and lockdown.

"We're also aware that the majority of people in Rutland, including Ketton, have been meticulous in following public health guidance throughout the pandemic.

"In truth, there are very few people who have shown a complete disregard for the rules since the pandemic began. Where we do have concerns about the virus spreading is among those who mean well and follow most restrictions but bend the rules on occasion, to see a close friend, visit family members or travel further than is necessary to shop or exercise.

"Given the seriousness of the new COVID variant that is placing a huge strain on our NHS, any bending of the rules, however small, represents a risk. It is vital that everyone, wherever they live in Rutland, follows the latest restrictions and gives COVID-19 vaccinations the time they need to take effect."

Help and support is available for anyone who is struggling because of COVID-19 and the latest lockdown. Details of this support can be found online at: www.rutland.gov.uk/coronavirus.

Anyone who is clinically vulnerable to COVID-19 and needs urgent assistance can contact the Council's Crisis Helpline by calling: 01572 729 603.
