Uppingham Mayor Dave Casewell has urged residents not to 'panic buy' and to care for their community.

His comments came in a statement announcing the closure of the town hall and the postponement of other council activities, such as meetings and civic events, until further notice.

In a message from the town council, Mayor Casewell said he sought to reassure the public the town council was taking all necessary precautions, and following government advice.

He continued: "Where necessary our Officers will be working from home, to ensure as much continuity with their duties and responsibilities during this uncertain time.

"We are currently awaiting advice from Central Govenment as to how to meet as a council to progress our legal requirements for taking decisions, approving budgets and so on.

"Please look out for your neighbours and the vulnerable members of your family. It is in difficult times like these where we can really show the strength of our community in Uppingham, by working together to care for those in need.

He added: "Also we would ask you to consider others when buying your groceries by only buying your normal quantities of items. This will help to ensure that no members of our community will have to go without."

Mayor Casewell also promised further updates on the town council website.
