Oakham's Wetherspoon has been given the green light to keep late-night hours for its beer garden, despite the objections of locals.

The Captain Noel Newton was last year given temporary permission to use the beer garden until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on the day before a bank holiday.

Rutland County Council originally allowed the new times for just a year, to assess the impact on neighbours.

And while objections were made, a fresh application for another year of the late night times has now been signed off by council planners.

The garden can only be used until 11pm on Sundays to Thursdays.

Writing to object, one resident on Dean's Street said: "My objection is based on the significant and ongoing harm caused to the residential amenity of neighbouring properties through excessive noise and disturbance associated with the use of the premises and, in particular, the outdoor drinking area.

"The existing arrangement has resulted in a level of noise that regularly exceeds what nearby residents should reasonably be expected to tolerate.

"The disturbance is not limited to general conversation.

"It frequently consists of loud shouting, screaming, chanting, swearing, and other forms of boisterous behaviour from groups of patrons consuming alcohol outdoors.

"As the evening progresses and levels of intoxication increase, the noise becomes more intrusive and difficult to control."

Meanwhile, a council report said another member of the public said: "Generally the staff have done a decent job adhering to the limitation although there have been some issues.

"Feel the existing permissions could justifiably be extended for another 12 months."

As public protection did not object to the application, it was signed off in July.
