Alzheimer's Society members and former carers will launch the Melton and Rutland MP's campaign aimed at improving local dementia care.

On Saturday 20 April 2024, John and Nula Suchet will officially launch Alicia Kearns MP's campaign to improve dementia diagnosis rates in Rutland.

John and his wife Nula both met through their spouses living in care with dementia, before marrying in 2016. John and Nula are now ambassadors for Alzheimer's Society and will talk about their experiences with dementia.

John Suchet is well-known for his work presenting Classic FM and prior to this as one of the country's most popular television reporters and newscasters.

Alicia's campaign is aiming to drive up dementia awareness, increase diagnoses in Rutland and put in place long-term, sustainable initiatives.

Figures from the Alzheimer's Society show that the dementia diagnosis rate in Rutland is just 52.7%, compared to the current rate for England which is 64.5%.

Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Melton, said: "Our dementia diagnosis rates in Rutland are sadly below the national average.

"It is so important that we improve our understanding and awareness of dementia, so we can increase diagnoses and ensure the right support and care is in place.

"I hope that John and Nula's inspirational story will start the conversation about dementia in Rutland as we aim to make our county a dementia-friendly place to live."

The event will take place from 12.30pm until 1.30pm at Oakham's Victoria Hall on Oakham High Street.

The talk is open to the public and free to attend. Members of the public are encouraged to register their interest for the event here.
