A glider pilot has been killed in a mid-air crash over Melton Mowbray, just a short drive from Rutland.

Police said they were called shortly before 3pm yesterday, Thursday 17 August, to reports that a glider had crashed after being involved in a mid-air collision.

Police reported that the aircraft was found in a field in Alderman Road with the pilot pronounced dead at the scene. The second glider landed nearby and the pilot suffered minor injuries.

Police officers and East Midlands Ambulance crew attended the scene.

Leicestershire Police is continuing to support the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) who will be leading on the investigation into the incident.

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident 422 of 17 August.
