The team at Oakham Fire Station, the local branch of the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, have warned Rutland residents about the 'hidden dangers' of log burners and open fires as the colder weather closes in.

The team said: "With colder days approaching, many are considering alternative heating sources like log burners and open fires. While they provide cozy warmth, it's crucial to be aware of the potential risks they pose."

They have also offered a handy list of advice and guidance to keep in mind when it comes to using open fires and log burners:

  1. Don't Ignore Safety Guidelines: Before firing up, make sure you're well-versed in the do's and dont's of using log burners and open fires. Follow manufacturer guidelines and local regulations to prevent accidents.
  2. Do Proper Maintenance: Regular chimney cleaning is a must to prevent dangerous buildup. This helps avoid chimney fires that can result from burning unseasoned wood or other materials.
  3. Don't Burn Anything and Everything: Stick to seasoned hardwoods and avoid burning treated or painted wood, which can release toxic fumes. Household waste, plastics, and glossy paper are big no-nos.
  4. Do Ensure Proper Ventilation: Adequate airflow is essential to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Install a carbon monoxide detector and ensure proper ventilation to keep you and your loved ones safe.
  5. Don't Leave Unattended: Never leave a burning fire unattended, especially when kids or pets are around. Sparks can fly, and accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.
  6. Do Use Screens and Guards: A sturdy screen or guard in front of the fire can prevent embers from escaping and causing accidental fires.

The team concluded: "As we gear up for the colder months, remember that safety should always be a top priority when using log burners or open fires. Stay warm, stay safe!"
