Local hedgehog rescue puts out appeal for shredded newspaper
A local hedgehog rescue have put out a call for newspaper.
The team at Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue are in need of shredded newspaper which they use for bedding for their prickly visitors - and perhaps a sport of night time reading for the nocturnal mammals.
Rachel and Jay have been running Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue from their home since July 2021, and have cared for over 220 hedgehogs in that time.
The project started when the couple discovered that there were no hedgehog rescues in the county of Rutland committed to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of this unique animal which is now classed as 'vulnerable to extinction' (2019). They wanted to change this.
Now they work with local residents, volunteers and veterinary surgeries to help support Rutland's hedgehog community.
They are not a charity, so they rely on donations of goods and money to keep going, as well as hosting an annual fundraising quiz and other well-supported local events.
While they welcome donations of food and money to help fund their vets bills, they also rely upon support from the local community on more mundane bits, such as newspaper for bedding.
As such, they have put a call out for newspaper to be dropped at their home-based sanctuary.
They said: "f you can help by donating newspaper we'd be very grateful. We have been so busy recently that we are burning through our stock.
"We have a large box in front of the house for donations. If you need our address please message or WhatsApp us."
