A local lad with a genetic disorder is on the lookout for a running buddy to support his training.

Joe, who runs in Stamford and Rutland, is hoping to take his running to the next level, and needs a buddy to join 'team Joe' and support his fitness and friendship journey.

Parkrun Rutland have been supporting Joe, and have put out an appeal to those who may be able to help.

They shared a message from Joe and his supportive parents, Sarah and Kevin: "Can you help take Joe's running to another level? Joe is looking for a buddy / buddies.

"Joe looks forward to parkrun every week. It's a firm fixture in his week and his Personal Best so far is 34.17.

"He isn't only in it for the time though, as he was born with Fragile X Syndrome which means he can struggle in some social situations due to communication difficulties. The friendly atmosphere of parkrun means that he feels accepted and confident, and he certainly buzzes all day after his run, which he is enabled to do by his Whatsapp group of run buddies who he met through completing the Stamford Striders Beginners course last summer.

"He wants to progress with his running and he has been invited to join the main Stamford Striders Club on Tuesday evenings at 7pm which would be a real achievement for him. He is now looking for people to support him to with making this a reality. Stamford Striders are offering a free place in their friendly club to anyone running with Joe.

"The ideal person would be someone with a sense of humour who can enjoy a run alongside Joe at his pace, and make sure roads are crossed safely."

If you would be interested in helping to make a big, healthy difference to Joe's life then please get in touch at [email protected] or [email protected].

The team concluded: "We appreciate there may be more questions you will have about helping with this so please don't hesitate to contact us for a chat. With thanks from Sarah and Kevin, Joe's mum and dad."

With thanks to Rutland parkrun for allowing us to share Joe's story.
