Modern updates proposed for historic pub village pub
By Local Democracy Reporting Service 18th Jun 2026
Multiple proposed changes to a 17th century pub in Cottesmore have been submitted to a council.
Under the plans, the Sun Inn would receive a raft of updates inside and out, including a new rear extension, relocated women's toilets and revised seating areas.
These have been drawn up to improve ease of movement throughout the pub for customers and staff, while enhancing access for those with mobility impairments. Several cosmetic renovations, including window repairs, are also planned.
"It's basically a repair job," the Sun Inn's landlord Mark Holland said.
"So many pubs are closing now, so we're doing anything to get the punters in."
As a Grade II listed building, the Sun Inn is protected from major alterations without express permission from Rutland County Council. The application maintains the proposed changes would "avoid interruption to the principal historic form, original architectural character and significant fabric of the listed building".
According to the brewery Everards, which filed the application, the scheme represents a heritage-led investment project intended to ensure that The Sun Inn remains "commercially viable and capable of serving the local community for the foreseeable future".
"The building is Grade II listed and forms an important component of the historic, social and economic fabric of Cottesmore," the applicant continued.
"The proposals have therefore been developed from the outset with a clear understanding of the building's significance and the statutory duties associated with designated heritage assets."
The Sun Inn, at 25 Main Street in the centre of Cottesmore, dates back to the 1600s, having previously served as a coach stop as well as a meeting place for villagers.
