New homes in Ashwell approved

Plans for two homes on the outskirts of a Rutland village have been given the green light by councillors.
The application was withdrawn last year over concerns about the size of the buildings in Ashwell.
But the new scheme (2025/1252/FUL) has seen the 1.5-storey homes reduced in size. Plans for an access road also form part of the proposal.
The site is deemed to be in the open countryside because it is outside the council's planned limits of development. The application also includes a new access road leading onto Oakham Road.
Jacob Kaven from planning agent Class Q told Rutland County Council's planning committee meeting this week: "This application presents a revised and significantly reduced scheme following the withdrawal of an earlier proposal on the same site.
"The amendments directly address earlier concerns about scale and character.
"The dwellings have been reduced in height and from the street, the buildings read as bungalows.
"Here the benefits are clear – the delivery of two new homes, support for local services, and a modest but positive contribution to housing supply.
"Access has been reviewed and is supported by the local highways.
"The proposal replaces a substandard access with a new compliant access and appropriate visibility."
The meeting heard that the speed limit on the road was 30mph – and that the two new homes would act as "infill" between two existing properties.
This means the new houses will not increase the geographical size of the village.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve the application.
The next planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 17, at 7pm at Catmose House in Oakham.
