Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from the 1st until the 7th of May 2022, and in Rutland our fantastic local hedgehog rescue team, Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue, are hosting a quiz to raise funds for and awareness of their home-run hedgehog sanctuary.

Set up in July 2021, this haven has hosted over 50 prickly residents, with founders Rachel and Jay funding and administering any and all treatment needed to get the hedgehogs back out into the wild.

While they have an Amazon Wish List from which people can select products to donate, they rely heavily upon donations to run.

They have already seen success this year, with their close friend Kelsey completing a skydive to raise funds for the rescue centre. Kelsey raised a whopping £360 through her efforts on gofundme page. Donations are still being accepted.

At the end of this week, they are hosting a quiz to help cover the cost of food, bedding, supplies and medical care provided by local veterinary surgery, Rutland Veterinary Centre.

The quiz is set to take place on Friday the 6th of May 2022 at Rutland Showground in Oakham.

Tables can be purchased for £20 and teams can be made up of 4-6 people per table.

The quiz starts at 7:30, and the bar will be open all evening.

To book your table please message via Facebook, WhatsApp on 07817251561, or email [email protected].

In the meantime, we'll kick off with our own little hedgehog quiz to get you limbered up for the evening of festivities.

  1. What is a male hedgehog called?
  2. What is a female hedgehog called?
  3. Do hedgehogs shed their spines?
  4. How many spines do hedgehogs have on average?
  5. Is it normal to see a hedgehog out in the open during the day?

Answers:

  1. A boar
  2. A sow
  3. Yes, when they are young - kind of like children getting their adult teeth!
  4. 4,000 - 5,000
  5. Unless it is breeding season, which runs from approximately May to August, no - this hedgehog might need your help.

How did you do?

If you think you're ready, you can book one of the few remaining tables and put your knowledge to the test!
