Oakham Fire Station is giving away hundreds of battery-powered tealights to encourage residents to have a safer Halloween.
The initiative, supported by the Safer Rutland Partnership, is a practical way for the fire station to spread Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service's annual 'Celebrate Safely' campaign message.
The fire station is also organising a charity fundraising pumpkin carving competition with just one entry criterion - the creation must use a battery-powered candle.
Oakham Fire Station Crew Manager Adam Johnson told Oakham Nub News: "We wanted to set up an event to spread our 'Celebrate Safely' message.
"This Halloween, we are holding a pumpkin carving contest and the best creations could win one of our amazing top prizes kindly donated by the local community.
"We are challenging residents to carve the scariest, most creative and horrifying pumpkin - the only stipulation is that you must use a battery-powered candle!
"There is a £1 entry fee and all money will go straight to The Fire Fighters Charity.
"We are looking forward to decorating the station, displaying the carved creations and welcoming the community to 'Celebrate Safely' with us.
"Battery-powered tealights have been supplied by the Safer Rutland Partnership and are available to collect for free from the fire station."
Prizes for the pumpkin carving competition have been donated by Rutland Cycling, The Lions Club of Rutland, Tesco and Wilco.
Coun Alan Walters, Rutland County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Chair of the Safer Rutland Partnership, said: "This is a great example of how the Safer Rutland Partnership is working to encourage simple, practical changes that keep individuals, families and communities safe.
"Fire safety is incredibly important and I'd encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer ahead of Halloween."
Candles are one of the biggest causes of fires in homes and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has some top tips to keep your family and property safe:
• Make sure candles and tea lights are secured in a proper holder
• Keep candles away from draughts• Never move a candle once it is lit
• Do not burn several candles close together as this might cause flaring• Never put lit candles on top of televisions or other plastic surfaces that will melt or burn
• Put candles out when you leave the room and make sure they're put out completely at night• Keep children and pets away from lit candles. NEVER use a candle for a night light
• Keep candles a safe distance from curtains, decorations and clothing at all times• Consider using electric or battery-powered candles - check they comply with UK and EU regulations
• Close inside doors at night
