The British Merchant Navy's iconic red flag will be raised outside Oakham Castle on Friday 3rd September to mark Merchant Navy Day 2021.

Merchant Navy Day is celebrated throughout the UK on 3rd September each year – the day that marked the start of the Second World in 1939 and which saw the first British maritime casualty of the conflict.

For this reason, this date is now recognised as 'Merchant Navy Day' – honouring the men and women who supplied Britain during both World Wars, as well as those who continue to face the routine perils of long voyages at sea.

Rutland will be joining local councils all around the country by raising the Merchant Navy's Red Ensign outside the Castle at 10.30am on Friday 3rd September.

Coun Ian Razzell, Rutland Armed Forces Champion and a former Army officer, said: "The events of this past year have served to highlight just how much we in the UK rely on maritime trade – even today.

"Merchant Navy Day allows us to show our support and appreciation for those who have helped to keep our country going during the best and worst of times.

"The Merchant Navy has been on the frontline of the effort to keep our island nation supplied for more than 80 years, often in perilous conditions. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude."

Members of the public who wish to attend the Merchant Navy Day flag raising at Oakham Castle are welcome to attend following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. However, social distancing is advised.

Merchant Navy Day was first recognised on 3rd September 2000 and is supported by local authorities across the UK.
