Oakham in history: All Saints' Church
Oakham and the surrounding areas have a long history of religious worship, which is apparent in the plethora of churches that punctuate the rolling hills and villages throughout Rutland.
Arguably, none are more impressive than Oakham's All Satins' Church, which dominates the local skyline with a sharp and distinctive spire.
Although the church was restored between 1857 and 1858, this spire dates back to the 14th century and is 'Decorated Gothic' in style.
George Gilbert Scott, who was involved in over 800 gothic builds and restorations, was the man behind the restoration of Oakham church.
However, inside the building there is still evidence of much of the original 13th and later 14th century architecture and design.
Oakham Church has a priests bell, which was installed in 1840, and a ring of eight bells cast by Gillett & Johnston in 1910.
The church organ was added in 1996. A few minor additions have been made in recent years, but most of those are community based, with clubs and groups being added to the agenda.
Now the church has a range of activities on offer, from regular services to music events and these local clubs and groups.
There is a bell ringing group who ring the 9 bells regularly on Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 10:30am, before the morning service. A team of keen ringers led by Tower Captain Louis Totaro undertake this task. Practice night is Tuesday, from 7:30 to 9:00pm, and more are welcome.
On top of this Oakham School have been putting on free performances for the community in the church every Wednesday lunchtime.
From 2020, a pair of peregrines were nesting on the church tower, which is a treat for local birdwatchers and residents alike.
