Oakham man's legacy is helping the air ambulance

An Oakham man has left a legacy of fundraising for the air ambulance.

In addition to leaving £10,000 in his will to the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance charity, which also serves Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland , Grahame Hooper's story is also helping to raise funds.

The move comes in advance of Make a Will Week in June, which should help the air ambulance partially offset income losses caused by the temporary closure of its charity shops due to the lockdown.

Grahame was helped by the air ambulance in July 2014 when he collapsed at the wheel of his car and collided with another vehicle in July 2014.

The Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance attended the scene of the accident and flew him to hospital for the lifesaving care he needed.

Unbeknown to him at the time, Grahame had a heart problem and the swift action of the crew – who revived him at the scene – meant he was fitted with a pacemaker in an emergency operation and made a complete recovery.

Grahame believed that the air ambulance saved his life that day.

When he passed away in April 2019 Grahame left a legacy of £10,000 to the charity in appreciation of us being there for him in his hour of need.

Grahame's brother Colin said: ""He was very grateful because he realised that he probably would have died if it hadn't been for the prompt action of the air ambulance crew.

"An added bonus was that after Grahame's accident the family made more effort to spend time together than we had in previous years due to the geography of where we all live."

"The air ambulance gave Grahame nearly five more years of life and gave us all precious time to spend together and get to know each other again."
