Rutland County Council: Cemeteries and church yards back open

Rutland County Council is taking steps to reopen cemeteries and church yards following a change in government guidance.

Local authorities have been implementing specific instructions from the government to suspend public access to cemeteries during the current COVID-19 pandemic, in support of important social distancing measures. This position has now changed following an announcement by Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick.

Councillor Gordon Brown, Cabinet Member for Environment at Rutland County Council, said: "Those responsible for managing cemeteries have, until now, been told to ensure these areas are kept closed to members of the public, except for funerals or burials.

"Councils are now being asked to reopen cemeteries and graveyards so that people can make private visits. Social distancing guidelines still apply and must be followed at all times. It is important that everyone continues to minimise the amount of time they spend outside their home. When you do go out, please make sure you stay at least two metres away from anyone who isn't a member of your household."

Rutland County Council has contacted Parish Councils responsible for managing cemeteries and church yards to notify them of the change in government guidance.
