Oakham's traditional buildings, excellent schools and rolling countryside have long been heralded as one of the best spots in the Midlands to live, being nicknamed the "Notswolds" for being an affordable equivalent to the Cotswolds. 

This week, The Sunday Times named Oakham in Rutland as one of the best places to live in the UK in 2025, quoting the excellent local businesses, proximity to Rutland Water and local arts scene as contributing factors. 

The article, written by Alexandra Goss, describes Oakham as a 'compact county town,' which is 'just as pretty as neighbouring Uppingham but far more practical.'

Goss draws on the charm of Oakham's local businesses as a key aspect of its unique beauty and sought after lifestyle, listing Otters Fine Foods, Hambleton Bakery, Oakham Wines, the French Cellar as the best food shops and restaurants. Goss also highlights Connie Taylor Ceramics, Darn Knit and Rock-a-buy Records as brilliant additions to the high street.

According to Goss, the best area to live in Oakham is Stamford Road. She says: 'A £750,000 budget will buy you a roomy detached house in Oakham. Leafy Stamford Road, on the edge of town, is one of the most sought-after streets, while many people gravitate towards the surrounding villages, especially ones close to Rutland Water, such as Empingham and Manton.' 

The article does not, however, note the high council tax complained about by residents, nor the expensive high street and the loss of many more local businesses that have had to close. The chronically underfunded County Council is also a sore point in Oakham with recent cuts to resources and funding, such as the loss of Catmose Leisure Centre and the recent scrapping of several local bus routes.

The article does point out what so many people love about Oakham. The culture, presence and prominence of independent businesses and shops and the importance of community and connection to nature are all sited in the article as reasons why Oakham is a sought-after place to live.
