In the article, the school expressed its sadness over the death of the 99-year-old duke earlier this month, saying it looked back with fondness at the visits.

Prince Philip visit the school 5 times- in 1957, 1967, 1973, 1984 and 2000. The 1967 and 1984 visits included the queen.

The school posted on Saturday to mark the duke's funeral: "Every occasion was memorable and the School was delighted that Prince Philip took time to speak to staff and pupils," the school posted,

"The School is extremely proud to have encouraged so many pupils to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and it is through this scheme that a special relationship was forged between Oakham and Prince Philip.

"The Duke commonly enquired after the scheme and its participants on his visits, and the School was delighted that he made a special visit to Oakham to present our 1,000th Gold Award in November 2000. "
