Oakham: What's on in Oakham this weekend

By Evie Payne 10th Mar 2022

There really is a bit of something for everyone on this weekend in Oakham, with music and theatre on offer on Saturday, an exhibition running until Saturday at Rutland County Museum, and a chance to get out and active at Burghley house on Sunday.

  1. Free Alan Oliver art exhibition
Saturday the 12th of March 2022 provides the last chance for locals to catch a free exhibition exploring the works of local artist Alan Oliver at Rutland County Museum. Alan Oliver's work utilises a mixture of mediums and subjects, including Landscapes, Still Life and places, from Rutland to Venice in both traditional and contemporary styles. Alan said: "I started to draw and paint mainly because I have always been interested to try to find out how things worked or why they looked as they do. From the age of about four or five I began to draw and paint anything that looked interesting to me. It just seemed the best way of remembering things and places." The museum is open on Friday and Saturday from 10am until 4pm and entry is free. This exhibition is only running until Saturday the 12th of March 2022, so catch it while you can!
  1. Canterbury Tales at Oakham Castle

On Saturday the 12th of March, Oakham Castle will also be hosting an intriguing local event: Green Matthews' Canterbury Tales!

Green Matthews present six of the best-loved tales, told in a variety of styles. Taking visual inspiration from medieval mystery plays and complete with a touring set which has been specially constructed to resemble a medieval travelling theatre, the three-man cast use drama, verse, physical theatre and song to bring Chaucer's characters to riotous life, telling tales packed with colourful characters and strange situations.

This is definitely not a dry academic take on old-English literature – the show is fast, furious, occasionally filthy and invariably funny!

Doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £12.00 and are available on the castle website or can be reserved via email: [email protected].

  1. Rutland Sinfonia Young Soloists

  1. Burghley 7 Road Race

Finally, on Sunday the 13th of March, Burghley House in Stamford will be hosting the Burghley 7 Road Race.

The 7 mile road race winds through the heart of Stamford and Burghley house, the course starting at the Tudor gatehouse and finishing with a downhill stretch along the Capability Brown access road, with arguably the best views of the house and estate.

Runners get to enjoy a closed traffic free St Martins High Street in the heart of the old town in Stamford, one of the most stunning high streets in the country. The course then re-enters the Burghley estate for a pass right in front of Burghley house itself before exiting back onto closed roads on the outskirts of the estate.

The adventure continues through the pretty village of Pilsgate and onto the green drift with views across the Cambridgeshire countryside. Runners re-enter the private Burghley estate where the public rarely gain access which is a real treat. The course finishes at the front and centre of the main entrance to Burghley house itself.

This race starts at 9:00am and last entries will be accepted at 11:00am.

The entry fee costs between £24 and £26 and includes:

Finisher medal

Instant results

Chip timing

Advanced medical support

Free finisher photos
