By Grace Kennington 19th Apr 2026
The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland is holding a special community event to commemorate the 100th birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The centenary, which will take place on Tuesday 21 April, will begin at Oakham Library, followed by a commemoration at the statue of Queen Elizabeth II in Oakham.
In the morning, there will be an event that local mothers and toddlers have been invited to attend. This will be a traditional 'elevenses' in a more informal setting with cake, crowns and a chance for families 'to come together in tribute.'
At 12 noon, the public event will commence at the Queen Elizabeth II statue, which the public are welcome to attend.
This ceremony will consist of a speech and the laying of a wreath by the Lord Lieutenant and the unveiling of a new lectern giving the history of the statue.
There will also be the reading of 'The Queen Elizabeth II Centenary Poem' by local actor and poet Henry Dawe.
The statue has a lot of significance locally.
It was commissioned following the Queen's passing and was the first to be completed and unveiled in the country, serving as a 'lasting tribute to her extraordinary life and reign'.
Now, the statue stands proudly as a focal point of the county town and is loved by locals and attracts visitors to the town.
The event from 12 noon on Tuesday 21 April hopes to give the public a meaningful opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
