Blogger and Oakham Town Councillor Martin Brookes has criticised the town's 'lack of visible commemoration' for the upcoming 80th Anniversary of VE Day.

In an email to Oakham Town Council shared on his blog, Councillor Brookes said he had 'received complaints directly from residents' complaining about the lack of flags and bunting up around the town.

Cllr Brookes said: 'VE Day remains a significant national event worthy of proper recognition. Indeed, many commemorative events across the country are beginning as soon as tomorrow, Monday, May 5th. As I stated during that meeting, it is disheartening that Oakham does not appear to be embracing the occasion more fully.

'I was particularly disappointed by the circumstances that seemly prevented the planned flag-raising ceremony in Cutts Close from occurring at the officially recognised time on the morning of VE Day itself. Such moments are important symbolic acts of remembrance.

'It is also disappointing to learn that the town and county seems to be relying on the future Armed Forces Day event to encompass commemorations for both VE Day and VJ Day. While honouring our armed forces is vital, combining these distinct historical events does a disservice to each.'

According to Cllr Brookes, the bunting and flags that were going to be used was 'eaten by mice.'

There will be an official flag raising ceremony on Thursday 8th May at 10am in front of Oakham Castle where the official proclamation will be read out by the Mayor of Oakham Paul Ainsley and a speech will be given by the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness.

That evening, there will also be a beacon lighting ceremony in Cutts Close Park with Morris dancing, music on the bandstand from Oakham School, entertainment and food with the official beacon being lit at 9.30pm.
