Road improvements on A1 to take place following MP’s petition and safety concerns from Rutland residents

Following a petition by Alicia Kearns MP, National Highways are to close the central reservation on the A1 to improve safety.
This is the first of eleven closures that have now been confirmed between Little Ponton and South Witham. The traffic orders will be published next week and if there are no objections, work will go underway in the coming weeks as part of National Highways' safety improvements across Lincolnshire and Rutland.
According to Phil Shaw, National Highways Route Manager: "This is the first milestone in a complex legal and technical process which will ultimately improve safety along the A1 across the whole region.
"We have listened to the concerns of local people and developed a long-term plan for this busy road which demonstrates our commitment to improving safety here for both road users and local people.
"There has been a lot of support for closing these gaps during our conversations with local communities."
MP for Rutland and Stamford Alicia Kearns said: "I am relieved National Highways has recognised the concerns of so many of our communities by taking this important step.
"This is an important first step, but there is still more to be done including the closure of the larger central reservation gaps, but I'm pleased we are securing such a good traction and progress to make the A1 safer."
