Rockingham Castle announces indefinite cancellation of annual horse trials
The team at Rockingham Castle have announced that they will not be holding the Rockingham International Horse Trials in 2024, and have not confirmed if the event will be held at the castle in the future.
Although just over the border from Rutland, the annual horse trials sponsored by Fairfax & Favour is popular with riders and visitors from England's smallest county, and attracts visitors every year.
However, the event will not be going ahead in 2024, and the organising team have not confirmed if the event will take place at the historic venue going forwards.
Rockingham's history dates as far back as the Doomsday Book of 1086, and has history with William the Conqueror, Edward I, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Catherine Howard and other notable figures.
In 1999, the Castle and Estate was handed to James who continues to use it as his family home along with his wife Elizabeth, and their three children Eleanor, Beatrice and Henry.
The family host regular events in the castle and grounds, including the impressive Great Park, where the horse trials have been going ahead for a decade.
Despite hosting many events at the family home, the team behind the horse trials announced that the use of the Great Park would no longer be possible: "We are deeply disappointed to announce that we will not be running the Rockingham International Horse Trials in 2024.
"We are extremely proud to have hosted some incredible sport in the Great Park over the last 10 years but sadly it is no longer viable to run the event at this time.
"We would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers, visitors, competitors, owners, exhibitors and sponsors who have supported us over the years, especially our title sponsor Fairfax & Favor and previous title sponsor King West."
However, this weekend the team will be hosting their annual artisan market, so head down to the Leicestershire venue to enjoy the fun...
Alternatively, head to our What's On page for other local events, including this weekend's Plough Fest in Greetham.
