A barn owl from Rutland popped to Skegness to cool off.

Earlier this month, a barn owl ringed in the Rutland Water area was found and caught in Skegness.

Barn Owls are birds of prey, hunting and catching small mammals, mostly field voles here in the UK. They have a range of specially adapted characteristics to help them hunt for food at night, such as super sensitive hearing and the ability to see movement with very little light.

The Rutland-based bird, ringed in 2022 from a nesting box on Ramsar Field, was found nearly 70 miles away from home in the seaside town.

The Rutland Water Nature Reserve team shared the news on their social media, adding: "That might not seem like a huge distance, but on average Barn Owls only move around 5 miles from where they were born. AMAZING!"
