Rutland residents and businesses are being asked about how the county should manage its recycling and keep the streets tidy.

Rutland County Council is seeking views on its Draft Waste Management and Streetscene Strategy, which has been developed to support the county in reducing its impact on the environment.

The Draft Strategy outlines the Council's vision for Rutland to become "a clean, green and sustainable county" and details how it proposes to achieve this by focusing on six key ambitions:

  1. to reduce the production of waste
  1. to change the way people, businesses and organisations think about waste
  1. to build communities where excess waste and litter are socially unacceptable
  1. to maximise the quality and quantity of reuse and recycling
  1. where prevention, reuse or recycling are not possible, to maximise the recovery of energy and value from waste
  1. when waste is produced, to encourage community and commercial opportunities to use it as a resource

Cabinet Member for Environment, Coun Gordon Brown, said: "We are facing a climate crisis and it is important that we all take responsibility to tackle it. This Strategy is just one step in the Council's approach to tackling climate change and keeping our countryside clean and free of litter.

"It is therefore important to understand whether residents and businesses agree with the approach and to understand what support they need to help the county become clean, green and sustainable."

The consultation began today, Monday March 9 and runs until April 3.

It can be can be accessed online at: www.rutland.gov.uk/consultation.

Hard copies of the Strategy and feedback forms are also available all Oakham, Uppingham Ryhall and Ketton libraries, and the Council's mobile library.
