This weekend, The Lions Club of Rutland collected an impressive £532 for Marie Curie in a fundraising drive at Oakham's Tesco.

Rutland's Lions Club was created in 1975, and is a small but important part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, the largest service organisation in the world with 44,500 Clubs in 205 countries, and with a total of 1.3 million members.

Now the largest humanitarian service organisation in the world, Lions Club International was founded in 1917, the vision of one man, Melvin Jones, whose guiding principle was, "You won't get very far in this world until you start doing something for somebody else".

On Friday 17 and Saturday 18 February, The Lions Club of Rutland were situated in the lobby of Oakham's Tesco superstore continuing to "do something for somebody else".

The team, made up of local volunteers, spent the two days collecting for Marie Curie, an annual fundraising drive led by the hard working group.

Allan Grey, the Rutland Lions' Club Secretary, said: "I am pleased to announce that £532 was collected over Friday and Saturday by the generous customers of Tesco in Oakham."
