Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has called for an upgrade of the A1 to motorway.

The MP has made the call in an article for the Bright Blue group of left-leaning Conservatives (see attachment).

In the article, the MP bemoans a lack of transport infrastructure in the UK, saying the county is hindered by the quality of its infrastructure.

And she is pleased that the government is looking at the need for strategic investment.

However, Mrs Kearns highlights the regular road closures and congestion on the A1 caused by its many accidents.

She said: The strategic case to upgrade the A1 is robust."

Improving the road would reduce accidents and congestion, she explains, saving time and money for businesses.

Local authorities are reluctant to invest by the A1, she says, due to congestion on it,

Upgrading the A1 would thus make the region more attractive for investment.

"And as we begin to re-open our economy, it's crucial that the Government makes infrastructure investment in rural areas a priority."

The MP's comments were made and published before today's budget.
