Rutland MP Alicia Kearns speaks out about approval of China's super-embassy
By Grace Kennington 21st Jan 2026
MP for Rutland and Stamford Alicia Kearns has raised her objections in Parliament to the approval of Chinese Communist Party's plans for a new super-embassy in London.
Ahead of the Government's approval of the embassy, Kearns, the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, responded to an Urgent Question asking the Government if it would join objections from across the House or 'choose of dereliction of their duties.
She also made a Point of Order about the choice of Government Departments answering Urgent Questions on the embassy, asking 'if the Ministers will not answer on other people's briefs, despite collective responsibility' and 'if they won't answer on their own briefs, how are we to get answers in this place?'
The Minister declined to respond.
In a statement, Kearns said: 'Labour's greenlighting of the Chinese Embassy has gifted the Chinese Communist Party a launchpad for economic warfare at the heart of London.
'Despite the opposition from across the House, the Government won't listen. Instead, they have put our security at risk in a desperate effort to solve their self-inflicted economic woes.
'The Government can no longer hide behind planning procedure. Questions must be answered, and Ministers must own their decisions and all future consequences.'
