Remembrance events throughout the weekend in Rutland were very well attended.
On Saturday morning, Armistice Day, a service was held at All Saints Church, and at Oakham Castle.
In the evening, The Royal British Legion Concert was held, again at All Saints Church, attended by 106 people (compared to 69 in 2022).
The event raised £622.65 for the National Poppy Appeal.
The audience was treated to a riveting musical show from The Rutland Concert Band conducted by Ian Halcrow who pointed out: "The band has grown steadily since being formed in May 2008, and currently has over 60 players ranging from primary school age to retirees, and from relative beginners to accomplished musicians."
The youngest on the evening was ten-year old Alto Saxophonist, Deandre Dsouza, whose proud parents explained how he practices every day, absolutely loves his music, and has just attained Grade Six saxophone.
Among the pieces played were military favourites such as the Dambusters March and Aces High, classics such as Ralph Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis, as well as more modern pieces such as the Symphonic Suite from the series Band of Brothers and a Young Person's Guide to John Williams, with a medley from films such as E.T., Hook, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones.
The audience were treated to the mesmeric voice of award-winning soprano, Katie Marshall, one of the most exciting young artists in the classical world, whose pure tone while singing O Mio Babbino Caro and Bring Him Home, totally captivated.
The concert finished with I Vow to Thee My Country, Nimrod and the National Anthem.
Giving their time completely free, the primary sponsors of the event were Rutland Plastics, the administration sponsor was Oakham Town Council, and the venue sponsor was All Saints Church and the Oakham Team Ministry.
Other venues raising money for the poppy appeal included The Plough in Greetham, who donated 20pm from every pint of Poppy Fields sold to the cause, while Oakham Fire Station raised money with their poppy display, curated by local knitters and crocheters and the team of volunteers at Pepper's- A Safe Place.
Wreaths were laid at the memorials at All Saints Church, Oakham and at St Peter and St Paul Church, Uppingham.
On Remembrance Sunday, the traditional silence at 11am was followed by marches from the combined armed forces through both towns.
