This week, on 28 February 2023, a Rutland resident was awarded an MBE at Windsor Castle.

Barbara Crellin, who is known locally for her commitment to the Rutland community, causes, and local charities, was this week awarded an MBE.

Standing for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, an MBE is one of the highest ranking Order of the British Empire awards.

Mrs Crellin, who is involved heavily with Oakham RFC and Rutland Community First Responders, among other local groups, was awarded an MBE following a nomination by Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness – who this week launched fundraising efforts to fund a bronze statue of HM Queen Elizabeth II in Oakham. Read more about this here.

Barbara Crellin said: "I am totally in awe, inspired and humbled by this nomination, as I do all I do to make a difference."

Mrs Crellin was nominated for "Services to the Community of Rutland in education, sport especially children's sport across Rutland and Leicestershire, numerous charities and founding and now coordinating Rutland Community First Responders Community including responding during covid."

She and her husband have lived in Rutland for 41 years, after her husband's job brought them to the area from the Lake District.

Mr and Mrs Crellin brought their family up here, while Barbara taught in the area, and was a headteacher for many years.

She explained: "I have always been a keen volunteer, but this increased dramatically with my retirement almost 12 years ago."

In fact, Barbara's volunteering became so enthusiastic, that her name is attached to many local efforts and has drawn the attention of Rutland's Lord-Lieutenant, who nominated her for this accolade.

Barbara Crellin described the service at Windsor Castle as: "Beautiful, special and indeed personal. All security, ushers, officers, photographers and especially the Princess Royal were lovely, kind and did their utmost to congratulate me, put me at ease and make me feel special."

As for life as an MBE, Barbara said that she will "carry on volunteering and doing all I enjoy doing, much the same."

She concluded: "I just want to give opportunities and make a difference. Although I am not a true Rutlander, this is my home and I feel a great affinity with all of Rutland and Rutlanders; in fact, I belong."

Congratulations to Barbara, who will take over from Chris as the President of Oakham Rugby Football Club in May 2023, and continue to make Rutland proud in the many other roles she fills both within and for the local community.
