Ukrainian families still in need of help this Independence Day
As Ukrainian Independence Day approaches, local refugees and families are still in need of assistance.
With Ukrainian Independence Day just around the corner, 24 August, local communities are reminded of those continuing to live in danger and in search of a way to flee the war for the safety of their families.
As of 20 February 2023, councils across the country have helped 163,500 Ukrainians settle in the UK. However, with the ongoing conflict since the Russian invasion, there are still many more that need a safe home.
Since Russia first invaded Ukraine, Rutland residents have joined the country's efforts to help and have opened up their homes to families and individuals fleeing the war.
Councillor Diane Ellison, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Health at Rutland County Council, said: "We are so proud of how residents from across Rutland have welcomed Ukrainian families in search of safety and stability. We are grateful for those that have opened up their homes to these families and provided them with some sort of normality during this time of crisis.
"Unfortunately, as we come closer to Ukrainian Independence Day, we are reminded that the situation in Ukraine is not improving, and that new sponsors are needed to allow more families to find the safe, stable environment that they so desperately need and deserve."
Under the scheme, UK residents can 'sponsor' a Ukrainian refugee, offering them a spare room or home for at least six months.
