On Saturday 10th May, the Uppingham and District Twinning Association will be holding an Open Afternoon at Uppingham Town Hall for anyone interested in learning more about the group.

Uppingham has been twinned with the French town of Caudebec-en-Caux in Normandy since 1982. During that time, both towns have enjoyed visits in both directions.

At the Twinning Associations' most recent visit to Caudebec in the autumn, children from both the English and French towns came together (see photo) and formed a happy bond, despite a lack of common language. The exchange brings massive benefits to parents and children and gives young people a unique chance to connect with similar children from another country, and maintain friendships as pen pals, strengthening their language skills and forming a lasting friendship.

The Open Afternoon is a great opportunity for those either keen to get involved or unsure if this group is for them to come along and chat with existing members about their experiences. Taking place between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday 10th May, attendees to the Open Afternoon can take a look at some of the souvenirs and memorabilia collected across various Twinning visits, while enjoying light refreshments and chatting to current members of the group about their experiences with Twinning.

This valuable opportunity will enable attendees to learn more about the group in an informal setting and hear about future visits and the establishment of the new pen pal scheme for local school pupils.

It is important to note that you do not have to live in Uppingham to get involved, nor fo you have to be able to speak French. Previously, members of the group have forged strong relationships with their counterparts without speaking much French at all.

There are also two upcoming fundraising events: a Treasure Hunt on Saturday 21st June and a Quiz Night on Friday 5th September. Everyone is welcome to attend, and more information will be available about these events nearer the time.

To express interest in attending the Open Afternoon, Treasure Hunt or Quiz Night, – please contact Henry Dawe on 01572 823629 or at [email protected]. Henry will speak to the gathering at 3.30pm but guests are welcome to arrive at any point depending on the time that they have available. If you are unable to attend but are interested in the twinning, please contact Henry.
