There are a number of events being held across the county between Friday 8th and Monday 11th November to mark Remembrance Day this year.

Rutland has close connections to the Armed Forces, with two army bases in the county and lots of veterans and military personnel living in the area. This means that one in five Rutland Residents have some kind of connection to the Armed Forces.

As a county, it is essential to reflect and remember those who fought and lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces, with lots of events being held in Oakham and Rutland to mark Remembrance Day.

His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness said: "Remembrance is particularly important in our County with its large serving military population and large military veteran population. Our Rutland events will be a fitting tribute to all those who have and continue to serve our Country and keep us secure."

This year, Oakham's branch of the Royal British Legion hopes to surpass last year and raise over £30,000

Festival of Remembrance

On Friday 8th November, the Lord Lieutenant has organised Rutland's third 'Festival of Remembrance,' which will be held in the Pavilion at Rutland Hall Hotel. This will include a reception from 6.30pm and a concert from 7.30pm, including performances from The Cottesmore Military Wives Choir, The LNR ACF Corps of Drums, Uppingham School Pipe Band and songs from pupils at Rutland's secondary schools.

For more information and how to book tickets, visit the Lord Lieutenant's website.

Music for Remembrance

Held at All Saints' Church in Oakham, Music for Remembrance is a performance by Rutland Concert Band, featuring award-winning Soprano Katie Marshall.

All songs will feature the central theme of Remembrance, with all proceeds being donated to the Poppy Appeal. This event welcomes members of the public starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 and are available to purchase on the door.

County Service of Remembrance and Parade

Rutland's County Service of Remembrance will take place at 2.30pm on Sunday 10th November.

First, local groups including miliary units, cadets, scouts, guides, voluntary organisations and Armed Forces veterans will parade from Oakham Castle, along the High Street to All Saints' Church. There, a service will commence at 2.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend this service but must be seated in the church by 2.15pm.

The service will end with the laying of the wreath ceremony, followed by the parade marching back to Oakham Castle. Here, the Lord Lieutenant will give the salute on Oakham High Street.

Armistice Day Service

To mark Armistice Day on Monday 11th November, a short service will be held in the grounds of Oakham Castle from 10.45am. This will mark the day that the Armistice was declared.

The service will be conducted by Venerable John Ellis CB, former Chaplain in Chief to the Royal Air Force, and will be attended by representatives of local military units and veterans' organisations.

A minute's silence will be observed at 11am.

Churches across the county will be holding their own Remembrance Services. For more information on this, contact your local church.
