27th Jul 2019 | Local Sport

Oakham's United unbeaten record in Groundhop games came to an end at Parson Drove today.

However, the game left an aftermath of controversy and debate as the home team used four substitutes instead of the maximum of three.

The Peterborough and District League will now investigate the matter, so it could be said that the match is not over yet.

The match started in torrential rain and in front of a bumper Groundhop crowd of 261.

Fielding several players with higher league experience, Parson Drove went on the attack from the first whistle.

After five minutes the home team came close with a header over the bar.

James North had a half-chance for Oakham but the ball went wide.

After another effort that was narrowly off target Parson Drove opened the scoring after eighteen minutes.

This was followed by several near misses from the home side including a missed penalty on the half hour mark.

In a rare Oakham attack, Kieron Burley hit the side netting before Parson Drove added a second goal.

The match was effectively over as a contest by half-time as Parson Drove went 3-0 up after forty minutes.

Although the second half was goalless it was not without incident.

Oakham played better football and the defence was tighter.

Parson Drove had a goal disallowed but Oakham created more chances than in the first half.

As Oakham went looking for a consolation goal they almost succeeded five minutes from time and were unlucky not to net following a goalmouth scramble.

Now we will have to wait and see what the Peterborough and District League decides about Parson Drove's use of four substitutes.

General opinion is that Oakham may well be awarded the points. Time will tell.

Oakham United: 1. Charlie Griffen; 2. Matt Richmond: 3. Jamie Maxwell; 4. Sam Munton; 5. Richard Nelson; 6. James North; 7. Kieron Burley; 8. Joe Hatherill; 9. Alex Brockbank; 10. Steve Mastin; 11. David Bates. Substitutes: Zac Cameron, Kris Kefford, Stewart Lambie.
