The Greetham Valley Club Championships are normally played over 36 holes, over a weekend, but this year the inclement weather on Sunday led to the cancellation of the second 18 holes.
This meant that the championships were decided on the first round, and in the Gents section Trevor Smith (hcp 1) retained his title of Club Champion with a gross score of 74, just beating Leon Wyche (4) on countback.
Trevor had a slightly wobbly front nine by his standards in which he dropped shots to turn at 3 over. Coming home, however, Trevor was immaculate in that he parred every hole except the 13th which he birdied.
Leon fared very similarly to the extent that he turned at only 2 over (thanks to a birdie on the 9th) and, although he completed the back half in regulation, a birdie on 13 (after a bogey on the 10th) was not quite sufficient to squeeze past Trevor for the title.
In the award for best nett score, Nigel Broadband (13) came in with a very steady score of 69 to win by one shot from Oliver Easson (15). Nigel had a bit of a mixed bag of a round with
eight pars and one birdie but also managed to include two double bogeys to take a little gloss off his card. Oliver was looking particularly strongly placed after he eagled the 15th but it was a visit to the water on the last which consigned him to a double bogey and the runner-up position. In the Ladies competition, Liz Haughton (5) emerged as Ladies Champion following an excellent score of 78. Just behind, with a score of 79, was Sophie Beardsall (1) who played very steadily but allowed a couple of double bogeys to mar her card. The steamy weather on Wednesday certainly affected the well-represented field in the Ladies Mid-Week Stableford Qualifier, but it was no hindrance to the top two players who could only be separated on countback. Jackie Friend (17) had a storming round to score 40 points and come out on top, but it could have been so much better as she failed on two holes. Jackie started steadily enough with 19 points on the front, even after visiting the water on the 6th and registering a failure. On the back she started steadily again and a birdie on the 12th inspired herand although she had second failure (on 16) another birdie on the 17th meant she finished in
top position. Ellie Haughton (2) carded a total of five birdies in her round as she completed the last nine holes in two under gross. Third spot went to Ladies Captain Liz Haughton (6) with a total of 35 points - Liz was steady throughout although the 16th gave her some problems. The Lincolnshire County Betterball South competition (organised by Jackie Friend) was held this year at Belton Park on Monday 22 July. There was a big field with 58 pairs from 13 out of 17 clubs in Lincolnshire South. Playing a betterball stableford format with 90% handicap allowance, Greetham star player, Ellie Haughton (2), came first with her playing partner, Tilly Kedzlie (6) of Spalding. With both players playing very well, they finished with 43 points, beating two other teams on countback as a result of netting 24 points on their back 9 - an amazing score and one in which they only bogeyed 2 holes but scored 11 pars and 5 birdies between them. Isabella Condie, playing at South Kyme, was the winner of the Stamford Plate for the best nett score in the Stamford and Nicky Molton Trophy, with a great score of 68 (nett 81). Round 2 of the Seniors Championship, played on the Valley course, went ahead on Monday(after Sunday's downpour) and there was a fantastic win for George Brand (17) as he scored an amazing nett 60 thanks to 10 pars and seven bogeys.
George's only blip was a double bogey on the challenging 17th. Behind George, Ken Porter (10) scored nett 63 as a result of his round which included two birdies but Ken also doubled the 17th to spoil his card.
Neither of these scores, however, were good enough to prevent Graham Smith from taking the Senior Championship for the second year running by virtue of his gross aggregate score over the two weeks of 156 (83 + 73) which beat the runner-up, Eddy Montgomery who totalled 159 (83 + 76).
Graham nearly threw it away when, having birdied 12 and 13, he took a triple on the 14th but he was able to recover over the last few holes. In the nett competition George Brand's nett 60 moved into first place with an aggregate of 136, just beating a resurgent Fred Aspin who totalled 139.
