Golf report by David Aldred: There was frustration for the lowest scorer in the May Medal, played on the Greetham Valley Golf Club Lakes Course, as Daniel Szymanski (17 handicap) scored an excellent nett 66 but was ruled ineligible as he had not played sufficient qualifying rounds to make himself eligible for competition placement.

Daniel had played an excellent back nine at 3-over par gross but was relegated on application of the rules. The overall winner therefore, also with nett 66, was John Keer (14) who had a great round with two birdies and nine pars but a struggle on the 11th prevented him finishing with an even lower score.

In second place, much to his surprise, was Terry McNulty with another 66. Terry (21) was looking good after a birdie on the 3rd and even after a visit to the water on the 6th but, having got himself into a strong position, he dropped five shots on the 13th and 15th and blotted his card to some extent, although a par-par finish was satisfying.

Third spot went to Daniel Kettle (11) with nett 67 after a splendidly consistent round of 10 pars, seven bogeys and a birdie (on the 13th) thrown in for good measure.

In the Ladies Medal there was a clean sweep for the Haughton family as daughters Ellie and Izzy beat mother Liz into third spot with her score of nett 75. Izzy (10) was second with nett 72 thanks to a stream of pars and only one double bogey whilst Ellie started like a train with birdies on the first two holes followed by pars everywhere else apart from two bogeys.

On Wednesday, the Ladies played a qualifying stableford competition on the Valley Course and Sue Clegg (29) was delighted to take third spot with 33 points and was particularly pleased to finish with a par on the last.

Just ahead of her was Ellie Haughton who scored 34 after a level par front nine only to finish the last two holes bogey-bogey. Top place went to went to Rachel Southwell (26) who scored 35 points in spite of a failure on the 6th hole.

On Monday, in fine weather conditions, the Seniors played a monthly qualifying stableford competition on the Lakes Course and there was a satisfying win for Dave Chisholm as he pipped two other players to take the prize on countback with 39 points.

Dave (20) started somewhat erratically as he scored only two points over the first two holes but he gradually edged into form and by the back nine he was playing steady and reliable golf to pick up points at all stages.

In second place, also on 39, was Peter Wood (15) who was particularly strong on the front nine at only 4-over gross, but the return saw a couple of double bogeys creep onto his card at the start of the half and Peter lost a little rhythm as he searched to recover his position.

Third place went to the early clubhouse leader Ian Hippey (15) who, like Peter scored 39 and also turned at four over gross after an excellent front half. But a failure on the 11th was costly and a visit to the water on the last pushed him into third place.

The Greetham Valley First Team played their most recent match eight days ago and hosted a strong Sleaford team but maintained their undefeated run at home which has lasted for nearly four years.

Captain Richard Wilson and Rory Smith went out first followed by Pete Dickinson and Leon Wyche; both pairs played well but were ultimately defeated by their opponents.

This put some pressure on the last four groupings but the pairing of Chris Steele, in his first outing off the season, and Paul Clegg secured a comfortable win and the team's first points of the day.

With Darren Sargood and Russ Aust also securing a win in the final match, the 3rd and 4th matches would decide the outcome.

Joe Sargood and Darren Child secured a hard-fought half but with Adam Clegg and Trevor Smith 2-down with two to play things did not look good.

However, they secured a birdie on the 17th to win that hole and used their experience to par the last whilst the visitors could only manage a bogey. A great half from them and the team.

Team Captain Richard said: "To have won one, drawn one, and lost one in our first three games is a great start especially when we were not expected to win anything all season. A great team effort."

The Juniors played their first round of the BCCS Junior Knockout (equivalent to last year's Poppy Golf) against Belton Woods at home and achieved an excellent start to their campaign.

The team of Joe Sargood and Henry Hunter (playing his first match) and Luc Affleck partnered with Izzy Haughton won 4-up (in aggregate) after two excellent matches.

The club's Mixed Team played Rutland County in a friendly match in perfect conditions and came out winners by 5 and 1.

Lesley Storey and Malcolm Boyd played Club Captain Mark Durno and Bridget Yardley at the start and came in with a half but thereafter the next three matches all produced home wins as Chris Hatch and Dee Hinch won comfortably by 8&7, Ian Cunninham and Fay Taylor won 4&3 whilst Geoff Woolley and Dee Ginnity also had a positive 4&2 score.

Ian Taylor, who played solo, halved at the 18th and then Neil Bradbury and Helen Woolley finished off with another win, by 5&4.
